I don't know where I put my official list of criteria for choosing a place to move to, so I'd better get my act together and make a new one.

-Homeschooling community (not just religious)

-No long commutes/heavy traffic

-Crunchy area, lots of organic and healthy focus

-Organic farms nearby, and farmers markets

-Not too extreme weather; distinct seasons

-Acreage not too expensive (only maybe up to 5 acres)

-Lots of nice parks/outdoor recreation

-food coops and health food stores

-local organic farmers and organic sheep farmers

-closer proximity to a city for cultural exposure for us and the kids

-easy access to homebirth midwives, and enough to be able to CHOOSE

-clean fresh air and beautiful surroundings

-a wonderful job that Jake loves, with people he respects and who respect him

-other companies he could work for locally in the future if necessary

Hmm. This is interesting to me. I think, excepting the home birth midwife problem here, central/northern Kentucky or Cincinnati meet your criteria. Louisville and its surrounding areas would definitely be more your speed (frankly it's more my speed!) I love Louisville but we just couldn't find a good job there. =/

The crunchy area thing....it can come with a price. I mean, I've complained a lot about KY but looking at your list, so much of everything I value is on there! We have fantastic farmers, farmers' markets, CSA access, Cincy and Louisville both have seriously good restaurants and local history and cultural diversity...

I'm guessing this is why I'm not more dissatisfied with my life here. Although, excepting my sister and my grandfather, I would be perfectly happy living across the country from our families...

The only thing that the Cities don't fit, there, is the traffic thing, but if you live on a bus line, you don't need to deal with it. There'll be light rail from the northwestern suburbs to downtown Minneapolis in place soon, too.
