Donating money

I've been giving some thought to what organizations I might like to contribute to financially in the next year. I have gotten pretty cynical when it comes to donating money and time to nonprofits because, having been heavily involved in one I was extremely disillusioned and disgusted. Still, I feel like just the act of my taking that step would have benefits for me, even if I never know what is done with the money. I'm interested in supporting organizations that deal with environmental issues, alternative energy, educating women about birth, supporting women and children. Probably more that I can't think of at the moment.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for specific organizations I might consider?
