Fur Muff Knitting Pattern

by Julie Van Scoy
In the winter, few things are more annoying than making your hands useless in gloves. Try scratching an itch wearing mittens! Muffs allow easy access to your hands without having to yank off gloves and then carefully put them back on. The hidden pocket inside is large enough for a credit card, ID, and cash, which means not having to drag around a purse when you go out. And best of all, it’s cruelty-free! Make the hat and muff set and add a little funky glamour to your winter wardrobe.
I’ve listed the yarns I used, but feel free to experiment with any furry yarn for the outside, and any smooth yarn that gets 4 stitches per inch for the lining.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Length: 10.5 inches
Width: 8 inches
MATERIALS
Muff:
[MC] LLH “Apart” [100% Nylon; 110m per 50g skein];
color: 25; 2 skeins;
[CC] Noro “Cash Iroha” [40% silk, 30% lamb’s wool, 20% cashmere, 10% nylon; 91m per 40g skein] color: 61; 1 skein
Hat:
[MC] LLH “Apart” [100% Nylon; 110m per 50g skein];
color: 25; 1 skein;
[CC] Noro “Cash Iroha” [40% silk, 30% lamb’s wool, 20% cashmere, 10% nylon; 91m per 40g skein] color: 61; 1 skein
1 set US 7/4.5mm double-point needles
1 16-inch US #7/4.5mm circular needle
Extras: scrap yarn, quilt batting, yarn needle
GAUGE
20 sts/28 rows = 4" in Stockinette stitch
The Fuzzy Outside
The whole thing, outside, lining and all, is knit as one long tube and then folded in half.
Note: When knitting with fuzzy yarns, it can be tricky to notice a dropped stitch. To check, hold your knitting up to a light and you can see an x-ray-like view of all your stitches.
With MC, CO 70 stitches to circular needle. Place marker. Join; work in Stockinette stitch until measures 10.5 inches. (This measurement is only accurate when the width is stretched to 8 inches across.)
The Lining
Cut MC and join CC. Decrease 10 stitches evenly along this round (60 stitches). Work in Stockinette until just the CC part measures 3 inches. Here you will make the opening for the hidden pocket inside. Turn. From here you will be working back and forth in rows of Stockinette stitch. *Slip the first stitch as if to purl. Purl across to marker. Turn. Slip the first stitch as if to knit. Knit across to marker. Continue from * for 3.5 inches. Join and resume knitting in the round as before, for 3 inches. You should have a slit in the tube the width of a credit card. The length of the lining should measure 9.5 inches. Bind off loosely. Weave in all ends.
The Hidden Pocket
Along the top edge of the slit we left, pick up and knit 15 stitches. Work in Stockinette stitch for 4 inches and bind off.
Turn the whole tube inside out.
Sew the three sides of this square flap to the wrong side of the tube, forming a pocket with one open side (the top where you picked up stitches).
The Stuffing
Now, cut the quilt batting to about 8 inches by 26 inches, big enough to wrap loosely around the lining part a couple of times. Loosely stitch the batting together so it’s like a tube around the non-fuzzy half of the tube.
Fold the fuzzy part over the batting and the other half of the tube, so that the batting is sandwiched in between the two halves.
Sew the two ends of the knitted tube together to hold it all in place.
Wrist Cord
With dpns, CO 3 stitches and make an I-cord 8-9 inches long. Fold in half and sew both ends together to the end of the muff. Secure ends tightly. Alternatively, knit the I-cord to 3-4 feet long and wear the muff hanging around your neck.
The Hat
With MC, cast on 60 stitches. Place marker, join, and work in Stockinette for 5 inches.
Increase round: Increase 30 times evenly around. (K1, M1, all the way around)--90 stitches.
Cut MC and join CC. Continue in SS for 4.5 inches.
Decrease round: K2tog 3 times, evenly spaced.
Knit around.
Repeat decrease row until there are 30 stitches remaining. Switch to dpns when necessary. Cut yarn and pull through remaining stitches. Secure.
