Apr. 13th, 2005 02:17 pmI have a sudden and unyielding craving for tres leches cake. After extensive research lasting fifteen whole minutes, I have decided to try this recipe from Texas Monthly first. I love Texas Monthly, and am probably going to get myself a subscription just to stay "connected to my roots" or some such nonsense. I feel about my Texan-ness the way some people feel about their Irishness. Only, I have actually been to Texas. And was born there?
I'm such a little bitch. I know it.
We described my mom today as merciless, because she gave me a stern talking-to about my current state of whininess and bad-wifey-ness. She said she had just recently bragged about me to someone and now she was going to have to take it back. :(
Taylor has named the object of our next mission: Spumoni. I am resisting looking up places in Houston that have it, so that the whole mission can take place while I'm there, including research. Last time I was there we had a bit of luck with our tres leches mission because I found a lovely article on the best tres leches cakes in Texas, in Texas Monthly Magazine, of course. I wonder what it says about us that all of our objects of desire have so far been ethnic desserts. Hmm.
I always plan my vacations by the meal. When I get to Houston, I always have my first through fiftieth meals planned, often in order. This time I shall have to remember that in addition to the usual 5 bottles of barbecue sauce and salsa that I bring home, I also need to bring home some real live dill pickles. They are impossible to find here, of all things. Pickles! Anyway, we have some business to attend to near Boston this weekend, and of course I've already planned all our food-related stops. Ramen and dumplings in Porter Square; chocolate croissants at Quebrada; Boston Market on the way home.
I need to find a new travel focus. Perhaps one that would not go straight to my hips.
